I shot these last fall on nearly the last warm day of the year. It was such a fun time. They hired somone else for the wedding but at the last minute wanted to get some extra shots. They came to me for some first look and pre-wedding party shots.

Playing catch up. {Treasure Valley Family Photographer}

I am a little embarrassed it has been more than a month since I updated my blog. I have been so busy shooting. It reminds me of the story of the two hair dressers. Which one will get your business....the one with a stylish hair cut and clean salon or the one with the messy haircut and cluttered salon. Surely you've heard it!!

Let's get on with it! I am excited to get this one up on the blog. This family is obviously beautiful but they are also fun, funny and were so great to work with. They were patient with me even when I couldn't take them to the perfect location, which I think might have been Europe. If you are familiar with BYU athletics, these people will look familiar. It was a pleasure to be with them.

He is EIGHT and she is TWO. they have the best relationship and it is so fun to watch them. She unfortunately was not as cooperative as he was and I only got a few shots. Not sure why I am surprised, like I said, she is two. :) Yes, these are my own kids.

And by the way, I know that "photography" is spelled wrong in some of the watermarks. It has been one of those days and I am sure you can appreciate it is one of those things I am not going to go back and fix at this point. Ignore the watermark and enjoy the pictures!! :)

You know it's time to change....

You know it is time to change your blog header when...

1) there have been several birthdays for the child in the photo since the header photo was taken.
2) the family in the header photo has an additional child (ren).
3) the little girl's dress in the header photo is now being worn the little girls little sister. :)

These are just a few things I have noticed about my header today. That doesn't necesarrily mean I will do anything about it. They are just things that made me kind of smile.

I am going to sell one of my cameras. It is the camera that I used when starting out in my photography journey. It is a lot of camera and produces great results!

I have been so pleased with it but I really can only use one camera at a time so I need to sell it.

I bought it with 1600 ish actuations in March 2008. It now has approx. 32,000 (which is pretty low). I have always treated it with great care. It has had a body armor on for additional protection since I purchased it. It has never been dropped and I have all of the original packaging.

So, the camera is $450 + you pay whatever it costs for shipping. If you want insurance etc. you will need to pay as well. Of course local pick-up is available (Meridian, Idaho).
Here is a shot I took just yesterday with it. If you buy it, I would be willing to add you to my on-line mentoring group as well so you can learn to use it. :)

1. Settings: Shutter speed 1/250, Aperture f/5.0, ISO 400, focal length 65 mm

The companion lens I am selling with it is Nikon 18-200 3.5/5.6G EDIF AFSDX VR USA. The photo above and below is shot with this lens. The shot below is really cool because it was shot at 18 mm which gives the artistic distortion you get on a wide angle lens. I purchased this lens in March 2008 and have used it very little. It has had a filter on since it came out of the box. I have all the original boxes/packaging. You pay for shipping and $500 for lens.

I have loved this lens but I don't use it enough to justify keeping it. It is a GREAT all around lens because you CAN get wide angle shots like below but you can also zoom out and catch your child on the soccer field. It is a great portraits lens too. With the VR (vibration reduction) it aides in sharpness of the photo too.

2. Settings: shutter speed 1/800, aperture f/3.5, ISO 400, focal length 18 mm

These items at these prices are VERY fair. I paid much more for both and have used them very little. Do your research though and make me an offer. I will consider all reasonable requests. Oh and if you want to see more photos using the D200, just check this blog. Anything shot before November 2010 was done using this camera!! It has some serious skills. Consider it! Cash only.

Just so you know, I just googled it and this combination body + lens [new] is selling for $2200+ on Amazon (with no free mentoring). I am only asking $950.

Why are you charging so much?

Before I started shooting (3+ years ago), I wanted a deal on my family photography. I thought paying more than $50 a session was way over priced. I feel bad now that I was so naive and ignorant to the work of the photographer. I now realize that the photographer is not just spending 1 hour of their time with me and my family. It is much more involved than that.

Here is a breakdown on the time I spend for each session:

booking time: 45 minutes (client contact time, location scouting + any paperwork)
prep & travel time: approx 45 minutes
actual sooting time: 90 minutes-2 hours
uploading, editing and preparing CD: 5-8 hours

This is a very conservative estimate. It is time that I could be spending with my family or on other responsibilities. But just considering the time involved in a session is not enough. I have spent thousands of dollars (scarey, huh) on equipment including camera, lens, lighting, computer, software editing programs, color calibration system, props etc. Not only that, I am afraid to estimate the amount of time I have spent over the last 3 years learning the art. I read, research, take classes, contribute to on-line forums, participate in webinars, mentor other aspiring photogrpahers and am mentored. Not to mention the couple of college courses I took.

Let's just say that I think that my current rate of $150 IS a bargain. We all want a deal and you are getting one if you scheduled a session with me this year!!

Taking pictures of your own kids is really painful for all involved. On our way to church on Sunday, I stopped along the road to take these. Can you see how painful it was? Look at my oldest daughter. It pretty much says it all.

I did get a few others but I am not sure that they are keepers.

My sister had a baby and I got to photograph her. She is about 3 weeks old and was good sized at birth. It is amazing how quickly these babies grow and change. So, remember if you want newborn photos, it is best in the first week of their life.

Holiday Aftermath

For Christmas I made my mom and dad a Nativity set out of sculpting clay. It took way too many hours but the end result is really cute and fun. There is no way I could have done it without my friend!! This is my first time working with clay and believe me I was ready to give up the first day we worked on them. Here are some of the little statues (they are each 1-2 inches tall).

I have really enjoyed "L" and don't mind at all that she has been slow to walk. It has made it seem like she is still a baby. She finally figured it out this week! She is just so much fun.

We love her to death. From the flower on her head, all the way down to the pom poms on her shoes, and of course everything in between!!

Sometimes she is a little unsure of that camera that is always chasing her.

Here she is giving me her best smile. This is her "fake" smile in case you couldn't tell. :)

So sad she is growing up so quickly. Even if she is almost 17 months, I was okay with the crawling! I guess I will need to embrace this next life stage!

This poor kid {M.O.M.}

This poor kid had to experience his first TWO cavity fillings today. It was really sad and motivation to brush and floss more often. He was so good and only cried at the very end after we were in the car. While drolling and barely able to form words he asked, "Mom, when are they going to take this out?" Because his whole mouth was numb and puffy feeling, he thought the dentist had left something in. Later his brother said, "Mom, since he was so brave today I am going to go home and give him one of my favorite toys." It is so awesome to be a mother. I am so blessed to have these heart wrenching experiences on a daily basis.

So, I have been so busy shooting other people's families (which is FUN) that I have neglected my own. I think my passion and enthusiasm for photography was increased a little today when I shot this. Nothing special, just a normal everyday moment with my 3 year old. Food on face, messy hair, double shirt, I love it all! I hope to have and capture lots more of these with my others kids this Christmas break!

I love the color combinations of this familiy. What is most impressive is they filled a cancelation spot so they had less than 24 hours to pull it all together. Pretty impressive, don't you think? My cousin lives in Eagle and as a family they celebrated a lot of moments this last week. Their youngest son turned 8, entered Cub Scouts and was baptized by their oldest son who also received his Eagle Scout Award. Lots to celebrate!

These three girls are lucky to have amazing and talented parents! I love evenings like this! Look how adorable they are. I love their outfits - next time I have my own family pictures, I need to ask this mom for clothing tips. :)

It was fun to have an "assistant" tag along too. An extra set of eyes & hands are always welcomed!

Pettiskirt Play {Meridian Idaho Photography}

I know pettiskirts are pretty much a last year's trend but I don't really care! I have wanted to do a session like this for a long time. In fact it is safe to say I have been planning it for a year. Last year at this time I was ordering fabric to make the silly pettiskirts!! I sewed them earlier this year but haven't made the time to do a session with them. I realized this morning that today was probably my last opportunity because it is getting cold fast! I took these three girls out and we had a ball...mostly. It was actually pretty cold and windy!

A couple of shots in, my daughter announces that she has to go potty! Of course she does!!!! Ughh!!! You can actually see it in her face. I told her to "hold it" but her expression didn't change. :)

We couldn't have lucked out with better temperature! It was a beautiful evening. I am so grateful to my assistant who can dance the most amazing jig to get real smiles! This session was a lot of fun and work. Believe me, I was sweating! Thank you for excusing my set-up, it just results in such beautiful lighting (see below)!! It is unrealistic to even dream of a studio so I am happy you were flexible! So flattered and thrilled you gave me the opportunity to capture these beautiful kids and their love for BYU.

Normally a shot like this takes 20 minutes to set up and it only took seconds. I can't believe we were able to get it with a 3-month old. Just shows how tired he was. Thanks for wearing him out before you came!

I had some more fun today with an adorable baby girl. Thanks little "M" for an enjoyable session. What a cutie and such a good baby! If this were the only great shot we got (and it isn't) it would be worth the time and effort! Oh, and check out this most adorable hat!

I love my kids. Look how cute my little "J" is. He was posing for me so I could test lighting for my newborn shoot the other day. Isn't he cute with his dirty shirt and all? Later that day at dinner he pointed out his dirty shirt to us and told us exactly what kind of food it was that he had spilled much earlier that day. :)

This was so fun!! Tonight I had the opportunity to photograph 3 amazing kids. Their mom (and dad actually) is equally amazing and I love that she told the kids they could dress in whatever they wanted. All three of them were ready to smile. I am showing one shot of each kid...there are so many more to choose from.

This one is fun because I took her portraits last year and had to work for a smile. This year she was a whole new girl. Isn't she beautiful??! Enjoy this one and believe me there are many more!!

Her older sister was in love with the idea of brushing her hand across water while I shoot. How could I not oblige? Can you believe she is only a 2nd grader??

And finally their big brother. Good lookin' kids, huh? And so well behaved!
